Dulens APO Mini Prime

Compact apochromatic primes with a gentle, modern-vintage rendering. The Dulens APO Mini set covers full frame and uses a special coating to smooth skin tones and add controlled halation. Minimal CA and consistent mechanics (80 mm fronts, 72 mm filters). Wide open they bloom; stopped down they tidy up while staying flattering.

Overview

  • Full-frame coverage with APO design for reduced colour fringing.
  • T-stops: T2.4 set (21 mm T2.6)
  • “Modern-vintage” look: soft halation wide open; rainbow flare when pushed.
  • Consistent mechanics: 80 mm fronts, 72 mm filter threads, 0.8 MOD gears.
  • Light & compact (~0.5–0.54 kg each) — great for gimbals/handheld.
  • 46 mm image circle (FF coverage).
  • Neutral, natural colour with gentle fall-off.

Use Cases

  • Narrative and branded work seeking a soft, expressive image without heavy filtration.
  • Handheld/gimbal builds where small, matched mechanics speed lens swaps.
  • Mixed-light sets needing clean colour with mild character at wider apertures.

Dial the character with aperture.
Shoot near wide open for halation and a gentle bloom (the “modern-vintage” vibe). Stop down to reduce flare and tighten contrast while keeping flattering skin.

Exploit the APO correction.
If you’re mixing saturated practicals or shooting high-contrast edges, the apochromatic design helps keep magenta/green fringing in check compared with many vintage sets.

Match across the set fast.
Identical 80 mm fronts, 72 mm threads and 0.8 MOD gears mean minimal matte-box and motor re-rigging—use consistent rod spacing and motor positions to speed changes.

Gimbal/Steadicam friendly.
Their low mass and shared geometry make balance swaps quick; pre-mark plate positions for each focal length to minimise re-balance time.

Mind focus throw and close focus.
With long cine throws and modest minimum focus (varies by focal), allow room for pulls; consider a dioptre for tight product work.

Consistency in colour.
Keep white-balance stable across setups—the lenses lean neutral; let lighting carry the mood rather than grading around lens-induced casts.
